Why do I break-up "marketing" into so many categories (advertising, PR, etc.)? Because each category has its own very unique function. The problem is that most people have intermixed them so that they are often confused with one another. The best analogy I have heard to define the differences came from a piece published in Reader's Digest, written by PR practitioner Margaret Norman

"If the circus is coming to town and you paint a sign saying Circus coming to the fairgrounds Saturday, that's advertising. If you put the sign on the back of an elephant and walk him through town, that's promotion. If the elephant walks through the mayor's flower bed, that's publicity. Now, if you can get the mayor to laugh about it, that's public relations."
